ISEC 2014 - Final Report 07.02.2015

The „International Scientific Committee” was represented by the members of the “International Committee for Solvent Extraction (ICSE)” and the “Local Organizing Committee” was represented by the members of the German ProcessNet Working Party “Extraktion” (http://www.processnet.org/Extraktion.html). Both together with the “Technical Committee” reviewed the papers for the proceedings with the decision to be either in an oral or a poster session. The review forms contained the topics “Within the scope of ISEC”, “Suitable for oral”, “Maybe oral”, “Poster presentation”, “Should be rejected (Revision) and “Comment”.

The call for papers was made in September 2011 and the time schedule and flyer is also in the appendix. It was focused on nine traditional topics and three special topics (s. attachments) with the latter three in respect to the specific research interests of European industry and academia. All together brought an interesting mixture and fruitful discussions and was helpful to broaden the activities of the solvent extraction community. In respect to this it was also emphasized from the ICSE, that the topic “oil and gas” should be an issue in the next ISEC conferences.

All evaluations were overviewed by the conference chair with the individual reviewers and a task force of

Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Dr. techn. Hans-Jörg Bart, TUKL, Kaiserslautern Prof. Dr. K. Gloe, TU Dresden, Dresden
Dr. W. Bäcker, Bayer Technology Services, Leverkusen

finally selected keynote and plenary lectures. The final proceedings were stored as pdf on an ebook reader being given to all registered participants. It also contained the programme (see appendix), the proceedings and the book of abstracts. The conference was started Sunday evening with a welcome reception and at each day with a plenary lecture followed in the afternoon with two keynote lectures in a schedule with four parallel sessions. On the last day one of the keynotes had been replaced by an award session, where the Carl Hanson Medalist “Yizhak Marcus” was honoured.

The conference included a poster party in the evening with beer and brezels, an afternoon excursion to a guided tour through Würzburg, a closing ceremony where the poster prizes had been handed over and a conference dinner. The latter was a candle light dinner in the wine cellar of the Würzburg Palace including testing of local wines. Here tenova (Bateman Technologies) made atombola and as special highlight the first ISEC Award Dr. H. Reinhardt was honoured. Special minutes to that prices and awards are in the attachments.

Comments

It was difficult to find companies for the technical tours. Finally we ended with two tours to mining sites. As there was no solvent extraction the tours had to be cancelled due to lack of interest.

There were also several speakers (including a plenary) not attending the conference (strike on airplanes, etc.). It is advised to have a poster presenter as standby for up-grading.

Würzburg is a very scenic city with a lot of tourism activities. It was therefore no needs for a special ladies program. However, there was a request for a ladies meeting corner at the conference, so there was the possibility to organize something together.
